Author: Richard Nathaniel Hulse

James Codill (Caudill) Jr. was born about 1753 in Lunenburg County, Virginia.

A Kentucky Highway Historical Marker honoring this Revolutionary War soldier has been erected on Kentucky Route 7, near the cemetery where his grave is marked with an aged stone and an American flag flew daily in his respect. The sign reads, "James Caudill, born in Virginia in 1753, first came to Big Cowan Creek in 1781. Because [of hostilities with Native American residents], he took his family back to North Carolina. Returning here in 1792 with his family, he built a cabin, stayed several years, and returned to North Carolina. They settled here permanently in 1811. He was the progenitor to a large, widespread mountain family."  Note: James Caudill's son Sampson, changed the surname spelling to "Cordell" when he purchased land in Missouri in 1853.

James entered service as a volunteer in the militia of the United States, shortly before General Gate's defeat at Camden, South Carolina, for three months in Wilkes County, North Carolina, where he lived in Captain John Morgan's County, Colonel Ben Hern's Regiment in the North Carolina Line. From Wilkes, he marched to the mouth of Rocky River, then back to guard the frontiers of Wilkes against Tories and Native American warriors, and after serving his term aforesaid, he was honorable discharged at the mouth of Rocky River in Wilkes County, North Carolina, by Colonel Noah who then commanded the Regiment.

Shortly after Gate's defeat, he again entered service sometime before the Battle of Kings Mountain as a volunteer for three months in Wilkes County, in Captain Samuel Johnson's County, Colonel Shelby, and General Campbell. He was marched back to Wilkes County as a guard of the Prisoners. When after serving out his tour, he was honorably discharged by Colonel Cleveland in Wilkes County, North Carolina, in 1781. In his Pension Application, he gave his birthplace as Lunenburg County, Virginia. He was born in 1753 and served nine months in the Revolutionary War from Wilkes County, North Carolina.

The Patriot died on 30 May 1840 in Perry (now Letcher) County, Kentucky. It is told that it was his dying wish to be buried on his own land, which was on Rockhouse Creek, just off the present Kentucky State Highway Route 7, near Blackey, Letcher County, Kentucky. He did not want his dust to mingle with another's soil.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
