Joseph Catterlin, Sr., was born in 1741. He was a first lieutenant on the New Jersey Continental Line, from 1775 to 1783. The name of his first wife is not known. He married Mary Ann Mercer. The children of this marriage include: Darby and Abigail. He died in 1822 and was buried at the Miami Chapel Cemetery at River Road, Fairfield, Butler County, Ohio.

He was a Veterans Administration headstone. A SAR marker was placed by the Cincinnati Chapter of the Ohio Society SAR, 1 November 2020, with a ceremony.
