Author: Dr. Derrick Wayne Spell

Jacques Santiago Cantrelle was born at New Orleans, Louisiana, April 1, 1752, a son of Jacques Nicolas Cantrelle and Marie Marguerite.  Cantrelle was raised at New Orleans.  He married Marie Louise Picou about 1778.  They were the parents of sixteen children.

Cantrelle began his military service as a second lieutenant in the Acadian Militia of New Orleans, February 12, 1770.  He was later promoted to first lieutenant, August 21, 1779.  In this capacity, he fought with General Galvez in several expeditions against the British along the lower Mississippi River. 

Cantrelle died September 12, 1824.  He was buried at the Saint John the Baptist Cemetery of Edgard, Louisiana.
