John Campbell was born on 3 April 1742, probably in Scotland. 

From 1775 to 1783, he served as a Private in Union District, South Carolina, Militia, under Colonel Thomas Brandon’s Company. 

"Issued 12 May 1786 to Mr. John Campbell for £8..7.1½ Sterling duty don in Brandons Regiment a/audit. Annuel Interest £0.11.8"

He married Hester Clark on 6 June 1765 in South Carolina. She was born on 7 July 1748 and died on 29 January 1818. Their known children were: 

  • James was born on 19 July 1769 and married Elizabeth Parnell.
  • Henry was born on 22 May 1771 and married Margaret Darby.
  • Elizabeth was born on 3 May 1773 and married Samuel Martindale.
  • Samuel was born on 15 April 1775 and married Margaret Cobb.
  • Mary was born on 13 January 1777 and married Joseph Little.
  • Jonathan was born on 8 September 1778 and married Rachel Burns.
  • Lillice was born on 1 May 1780 and married Zadock Hurley.
  • Hester was born on 2 March 1782 and married Jesse Birch.
  • Rachel was born on 2 March 1782 and married Samuel Owen.
  • John was born on 5 November 1785 and married Lydia Pearson.
  • Rebecca was born on 24 March 1791 and married Benjamin Allen.

The Patriot died on 19 March 1824. He was buried in Mt. Holly Cemetery in Waynesville, Warren County, Ohio.
