David McInturff was born on 1 July 1762 in Virginia to Johannes "John" and Maria Rosina (Kern) Meckendorder/McInturff. His father had immigrated from Germany in 1729 to Pennsylvania. In about 1762, he and his family moved to Frederick County (now Shenandoah), Virginia, where he had 207 acres of land surveyed. David was the youngest son and was listed in his father's Last Will and Testament, probated in 1779 in Shenandoah County, Virginia.1 

He married Nancy Nichols on 28 July 1786 in Powell's Fort, Shenandoah, Virginia. She died in 1797. They had four known children: 

  • Mary was born in 1789 and married John Fout.
  • Elizabeth
  • Jemima was born in 1795 and married Jacob Shipe.
  • Henry Calvin was born on 29 March 1797 and married Elizabeth Ridenour.

On 15 October 1808, he married Catherine Munch, and they were the parents of nine known children: 

  • Jonathan was born on 24 February 1809 and married Catherine O'Farral.
  • David was born on 25 May 1811 and married Sarah Golladay.
  • Anna was born on 7 January 1812 and married George Henry Ridenour.
  • Frederick was born on 4 March 1814 and married Mary Ann Hockman.
  • Philip was born on 29 August 1815 and married Catherine Mauck.
  • Daniel Nichols was born in about 1817 and married Mary Burner.
  • Catherine was born on 22 May 1818 and married William McInturff.
  • Magdalena was born in about 1820.
  • Sarah Ann was born on 1 July 1822 and married Jacob Cullers.

At one time, David owned as much as 1100 acres of land. He was appointed administrator and appraiser of several estates. On 14 September 183?, he was appointed overseer of the road from the Crossroads in Powell's Fort to Adam Shearman's farm. In 1819, he was appointed as a school commissioner. He wrote his Last Will and Testament on 29 December 1827.2 He lived an additional 17 years.

The Patriot died on 12 February 1845 and is buried in the old section of Dry Run Cemetery, Shenandoah County, Virginia, at the bottom of the hill. The cemetery is located on land at or near what was David's property and was founded in the late 1700s. His first wife, Nancy, is buried there with four children, Henry, Jonathan, David, and Frederick.
