Born November 7, 1764, William Byers served as a Private with Virginia in the Revolutionary War. He married Susannah Fry. He filed his declaration for a pension on November 18, 1833 as a resident of Darke County, Ohio, age 69 years on the 5th of July last. He stated he entered the service in 1781 as a resident of Botetourt County, Virginia, as a Private, serving two terms of enlistment totaling 8 months. He was at the Battle of Yorktown. After leaving the service, he lived in Botetourt County, Virginia for about 2 years, moving to Montgomery County, Virginia, where he lived for 10 years. He then removed to the Powell Valley of Virginia where he lived 8 or 9 years and from there to Gallia County, Ohio 2 years, and Ross County, Ohio 2 years. He then moved to Preble County, Ohio, where he lived for about 25 years. His last move was to Darke County where he lived until his death on November 24, 1834 in Darke County, Ohio. He was buried at Abbotsville Cemetery, Van Buren Township, Darke County, Ohio. His grave has a newer flat tombstone and a 1776 marker.

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
