Directions to Cemetery / Gravesite:

Located in Clarke Co., VA, approx. 8 miles below WV state line. Easy landmark to use is to start at 809 Bishop Meade Rd, Millwood, VA 22646. This is the newest structure in use by the church. From parking lot, turn left onto Bishop Meade Rd. Proceed straight for 2-3 miles. Old Chapel will be on the left hand side. If you pass sign showing miles to WV state line, you've gone too far




Author: Mr. Joshua Shawn Wilberger
Attended College of William and Mary where received the Botetourt Medal for scholarship.  At reaching age of majority he inherited two estates in James City and Fredrick counties in Virginia.  Married first wife Susanna Grymes on 28 Nov 1772 in Middlesex Co., VA.  She was the daughter of Philip (1720-1768) and Mary (Randolph) Grymes (1729-1768).  She passed away on 24 Jul 1788, bearing 8 children in all.  Married second wife Lucy (Page) Baylor (1759-11 Nov 1843) on 24 January 1789.  She was the widow of George Baylor (1752-1784)
 
Held several public service positions, including: James City County Court (06 Nov 1772), Colonel of militia (by 1774), and James City County Committee same year.  On 27 November 1776 his rank of county lieutenant meant he became commander of the county militia.  Served in House of Delegates, successor to the House of Burgesses, for two years.  Committee assignments included Propositions and Grievances as well as Committee of Religion.  Represented James City Co. in the Constitutional Convention.
 
Served in 1774 James City Co. Committee of Safety.  Nov 1776 appointed Chief Military Office of James City Co.  Procured full proportion of troopts to Continental Army.  Was Col. of the James City Co. militia, and aide to Gen. Robert Howe.  Was probably at invasion of "Tidewater" & Yorktown serving Washington.  Supplied wagons & 3,972 pounds of beef.
 
For his service he received bounty land warrants for 4,666 and 300 acres.
 
After death of first wife and marriage to second, moved to Frederick County.  Part he lived in would eventually become Clarke County in 1836.  Constructed Carter Hall which was named in honor of great-grandfather Robert "King" Carter".  Helped to construct cooper's shop, tannery, sawmill, ferry, two gristmills, iron forge, and two distilleries.  Built Morgan Mill in Milwood with Gen. Morgan.  Died in Carter Hall, rank of colonel on grave stone.

Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format.
