Qualifying Service Description:
  1. 1775, he served as a Private in the companies of Captains Thomas Price and Philip Griffin, commanded by Colonel Moses Prolins of the Maryland Line.
  2. 1776-1779, taken prisoner at Ft. Washington. Later attached to the company of Captian Alexander Lawson Smith of the 11th Virginia Regiment
  3. 1779, he served with the Bedford County Rangers Company of Capt Boyd, Pennsylvania Line.

Joshua Burton, Sr. was born on 24 October 1746 in Prince Georges County, Maryland, the son of William Eller Burton and Lucretia Walker Burton.

Joshua’s first wife is unknown. His second wife was Nancy Beckett, who was 46 years his junior. His known children were:

  • Sarah was born in 1782 and married Jeremiah White.
  • Lucy was born in 1784 and married David Coon.
  • William was born in 1786 and married Polly Cole.
  • Basil (Bazel) was born on 22 March 1788 and married Eleanor Cole.
  • Elizabeth was born in 1790 d. 1835 and married Eli Gordy Perdue.
  • Thomas Beckett was born in 1793 and married Nancy Cutler.
  • John was born on 15 May 1796 and married Mary Wilson.
  • Lucretia was born in 1798 and married Samuel Hudson.
  • Joshua was born on 30 June 1802 and married Susannah Chiles.

Joshua enlisted in Fredericktown, Maryland, in 1775 as a private. He served under Captains Thomas Price and Philip Griffin in Colonel Moses Rolins’ Maryland Continental Line. He was taken prisoner on 29 July 1776 at Fort Washington and later exchanged. He was then attached to the 11th Virginia Regiment. Later, he served under Captain Alexander Lawson Smith of Maryland. Discharged July 1779. Joshua reenlisted with Boyd’s Rangers of Pennsylvania and was discharged at Bedford County, Pennsylvania, in 1779. He was engaged in the battles of Fort Washington, Germantown, Monmouth, and Brandywine, where he was wounded in the left leg. For a short period of time, he was a prisoner on a prison ship near New York City.

He lived in Madison Township, Section 17, on rented land. He applied for a Pension on 9 June 1818 in Franklin County. His application states he is a resident of Pickaway County.

The Patriot died on 13 August 1835 in Madison Township. He is buried in Hopewell Cemetery in Groveport, Franklin County, although no stone is present. His Last Will and Testament were filed in Franklin County, Ohio.
