Qualifying Service Description:
  1. 1775, he served as a Private in Captain Gordon Hutchins’s Company in Colonel John Stark’s Regiment in 1775 for eight months—Battle of Bunker Hill.
  2. 1776 in the company of Captain Andrew Burntin, commanded by Colonel John Waldron of the New Hampshire Militia for two months.
  3. He signed the Association Test at Allenstown.

The following biography was edited by and co-written by PRS staff.

John Bunten, or Burntin, was born on 25 November 1756 in Allenstown, Merrimack County, New Hampshire. 

For eight months, he served as a Private in Captain Gordon Hutchins’s Company in Colonel John Stark’s Regiment in 1775. During this time, the company marched to Massachusetts and participated in the Battle of Bunker Hill. He was discharged in about November 1775. Back home in Allenstown, he enlisted in January 1776 in the company of Captain Andrew Burntin, commanded by Colonel John Waldron of the New Hampshire Militia.

He signed the Association Test in Allenstown, pledging to defend the American Colonies against British hostility.

In about 1776, he married Elsy Elizabeth Webster. Among their known children were:

  • Robert was born on 5 August 1777
  • Sarah was born on 9 August 1781
  • John was born on 2 August 1783 and married Mary Hammond.
  • Samuel was born on 25 September 1785 and married Elizabeth Heath.
  • Andrew was born on 12 September 1787 and married Elizabeth Moore.
  • Elsy was born on 23 January 1790, unmarried.
  • Anne was born on 15 December 1792
  • Burnham was born on 26 February 1795
  • Jenny was born on 6 February 1797
  • James was born on 29 August 1799 and married Fanny Morgan.

He was a collector and constable for the town of Dunbarton.

He died in Dunbarton, New Hampshire, on 26 May 1833, aged 76 years, and was buried at Dunbarton Center Cemetery.
