HONORS TO AN OLD SOLDIER (1905)

"On Saturday at 12 o’clock, at the old Bullard homestead in Cedar Creek township, with a large crowd in attendance on the impressive exercises, the dedication took place of the monument erected to Thomas Bullard, soldier of the American Revolution, an eloquent address being made by his great-grandson, Mr. Von C. Bullard, ex-member of the legislature, and a prominent member of the Fayetteville bar.

The monument, the artistic work of E.L. Remsburg, of this city, is of the sarcophagus design, of Barre Vermont granite, and is very handsome.

Following is the inscription:

Thomas Bullard.
Born in Virginia Dec. 13, 1759,
Died March 26th, 1837,
A Revolutionary Soldier.
Enlisted in Sharpe’s Company, 10th
N.C. Regiment, Nov 10th, 1778.
Pensioned August 28th, 1833.
"After life’s fitful fever, he sleeps well."
Erected by his descendants, A.D. 1905.

Thomas Bullard was the grandfather of J.J. Bullard, member of the present (1900) board of county commissioners, and ex-chairman of the preceding board, after the death of Capt. A.B. Williams, and was the great-grandfather of B.F. Bullard of Savannah, Ga. His descendants are very numerous, both in this section and in other States, whither they have removed, and attained prominence in public life. Of the Tennessee Bullards, Gov. Frazier was a collateral if not lineal descendant of the Revolutionary soldier."

Service: Private in the Revolutionary War, enlisted 10 Nov 1778 in Sharpe's Company, 10th Regiment, NC for nine months. Applied for pension petition for Revolutionary War service.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
