Author: Charles Michael Morgan

Patriot birth and death: He was born about 1740 in Caroline County, VA and died on April 8, 1826 in Siler City, Chatham County, NC.

  • Patriot service: He resided in Chatham County, NC during the Revolutionary War and served his country as a civil Patriot by giving money to the cause.

  • Identification of family members: He was probably the son of John Cooke Buckner (1710-1782) and Sarah Morgan Buckner (1712-1788). (Note: It’s believed Sarah was a Buckner before her marriage). His wife was Martha Mary “Virginia” Pyle (1755-1826). They had twelve children: Margaret Peggy Buckner (1775-1846), Elisha Buckner (1777-1826), Aquila Buckner (1778-1854), Richard “Riche” William Buckner (1780-1833), William Buckner (1782-1829), Edward Wesley Buckner (1784-1861), Mary Polly Buckner (1786-1826), Nathanial Buckner (1788-1826), Sarah Buckner (1790-1870), John Thomas Buckner (1792-1874), Jesse Buckner, Jr. (1796-1863), and Martha Buckner (1797-1885).

  • A synopsis of his life: He grew up in Virginia. Around 1770, he migrated to North Carolina and eventually settled near Siler City in Chatham County. In 1773, he married Martha and they had twelve children in 22 years. He lived on a large plantation. After the war, he aided in the establishment of the Baptist church in North Carolina and served as a minister for more than forty years. He also preached on the Haw River Circuit in 1790 and in 1793 helped in establishing a church in Rowan County at the forks of the Yadkin. Jesse’s great grandfather was an English emigrant who settled in Virginia in 1661. He brought the first printing press to the Colonies in 1682.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
