Charles Browning was born on 20 August 1746 in Culpeper County, Virginia, the son of Francis and Frances (Norman) Browning.

He was married on 10 July 1767 to Mary Wade Strother. The following children are attributed to this couple:

  • Lloyd was born in 1773.
  • Cassandra was born in 1775 and died unmarried.
  • Joseph was born in 1777.
  • William was born about 1771 or 1779.
  • Francis Strother was born in 1781.
  • Charles Jr. was born in 1783 and died unmarried.
  • John was born in 1785.
  • Elizabeth was born in 1786 and married George Yates.
  • Sarah was born in 1787.
  • Mary Malinda was born in 1788 and married James Gaines Yates.
  • Lucy was born in 1789 and married Weedon Smith.
  • Nancy Anne was born on 10 October 1786 and married Alexander Ashby.
  • Willis was born in 1795.

In the year 1783, Charles paid a Supply Tax to aid the war effort.

The Patriot died in 1839 in Rappahannock County, Virginia, his place of burial is unknown.
