Author: Michael B. Gunn
Born February 9, 1760 at Stonington Point, Connecticut, a son of Zebulon Brown (1731-1814) and Anne (Main) Brown (1731-1822), Oliver Brown enlisted May 26, 1777, in service with the Connecticut Militia until November 22, 1780. He participated in the battles of Brandywine and Germantown and endured the hardships of Valley Forge. He served with his regiment in New York, New Jersey, and eastern Pennsylvania.

He was guard over Major Andre for one "watch" on the night previous to the spy's execution, October 2, 1780. One night he halted General Washington returning to camp without the proper countersign and marched him to the guardhouse for which he was praised by the General. He married 1) Mrs. Gracie Gregory Welch in 1780. He married 2) __ Beardsley, and (3) Hannah Perkins; Children: Oliver, Hosea, Dauphin, Lewis, Hannah (Bliss), Nabby (Searls) and Patience (Holcomb). He died June 5, 1845 and was buried at Concord Cemetery, Painesville, Lake County, Ohio, Plot: Sect 1 Row 5 # 14. GM by New Connecticut Chapter DAR. His grave has an older tombstone and an SAR marker.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
