Author: Henry Clint Peden, Jr
Nathan Breed was born 10 Aug 1755 . He married Mary Harlin (10 Aug 1758-02 Sep 1831 Monroe Co, KY). He died 28 Oct 1825 in Monroe Co, KY. His service was as a Private in Col. Thomas Brandon's SC Regt and a Lt under Gen. John Sevier in Greene Co, TN.

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHY submitted Aug. 30, 2015, by Kermit Lewis Breed, SAR # 187025, Texas Society:
Nathan Breed’s parents were Joseph Breed Sr. and Priscilla Avery. Born ca. 1744 in New London, Conn. He married Mary Harlan, daughter of Aaron Harlan and Sarah Hollingsworth, in Union Co., S.C.

He served in Colonel Thomas Brandon’s Regiment and is shown as having participated in the Battle of Cowpens the 17 January 1781.

"Stubs, Entries to Indents Issued in Payment of Claims Against South Carolina, Growing out of the Revolution" Book X Part 2 page 59 reads as follows:

No. 2750) Issued 11 Mar 1786, to Nathan Breed, for Two
X) Pounds 17s/1d ½ Stlg. for duty in Brandon's
Regt.V Acct. audited
Prin. L 2..17..1 ½ Int. L 0.. ..11

He was a member of Lt. Wood's Company

The Pension Application of William Murphy W9580 states: In August 1782, there was a draft for men to go against the Indians, I was drafted and hired George Dogget to go in my place and went to the place of rendevouz and gave him up General Severe insisted that I must go also, and I Volunteere and went on the tour for three months against the Cherokee under Capt Thos Wood [Thomas Wood], Lieut. Nathan Breed ensig[?] Commanded by General John Severe, the company officers all of Green Co. North Carolina [sic: the Greene County now in Tennessee].

Nathan received Kentucky land grants for 100 ac. 3 Apr 1799 in Green co. and 90 ac. 24 May 1803 in Christian co.

Nathan appears in 1810 Census in Barren co. KY and 1820 in Monroe Co KY. In both he is listed as being over 45 year of age.

Nathan was buried at the Old Mulkey Church Cemetery, near Tompkinsville, Monroe Co. Ky. The application for his headstone dated 1932 give date of death as 1826.

Nathan’s headstone reads “Nathan Breed - Lieut. Wood's Co., Va. Mil. Rev. War” with no dates. Buried next to Nathan is his wife Mary Harlan her head stone reads “ Mary Harlan Wife of Nathan Breed Born 1784 in Pa. To Aaron & Sara Harlan”
