Author: Tony Lee Vets
Marsham Brashear was born about 1752 in Prince Georges Co, MD, the first of ten children born to Benjamin Brashear VII and Catherine Belt.
Marsham had moved to the Louisville area as early as June 15, 1776. A meeting of the citizens of the area was held on April 10, 1779 and Marsham was appointed of one the seven trustees to lay off the town of Louisville and make rules for its regulation. This list was approved by Thomas Jefferson, which put Marsham and the other trustees at odds with England and made him a Patriot by virtue of his Patriotic Service. The trustees met on April 17, 1779 and appointed Marsham as secretary. In 1780, Marsham and other residents petitioned the Virginia legislature to pass an act incorporating the town of Louisville, to which the legislature agreed, and again named Marsham as a trustee. In 1787, Marsham was recommended by the County Court of Jefferson County for the position of Justice of the Peace, and soon thereafter his appointment came from Virginia. Marsham held this office for a number of years.
About 1780 Marsham married Lucy Phelps at Bear Grass (now Louisville) in what is considered the first wedding between whites in this area.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
