Author: John Woodward Patterson III
DAVID BOYD, son of John Boyd, was born 23 Mar 1743 in Northumberland (now Lancaster) County, Pennsylvania, died 16 Jul 1831 in Hopewell Township, Washington, Pennsylvania, and was buried at the Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Buffalo, Hopewell Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania. He was captured by the Iroquois in 1765 during an attack on his home and village at age 13, and held captive until the age of 17. He married in 1771, ELIZABETH HENDERSON, who was born 1746 in Cumberland County and died 1825 in Upper Buffalo Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania, a daughter of Thomas Henderson and Eleanor Porter.
David Boyd served throughout the War of the Revolution, having enlisted three times as a private: in 1775 with Captain James Chamber's Company, Col. William Thompson's Battalion of expert riflemen; in 1776 with Captain Charles Craig's Company, Pennsylvania Continental Line where he served with Samuel Henderson [PATRIOT Ancestor #: A054826], brother of Elizabeth; and Captain James Grier's company, same regiment, in 1776 and achieved the rank of Lieutenant. He was engaged on the bloody field of Brandywine, saw the crossing of the Delaware, and supported the surprise at Trenton. He was at Valley Forge during that terrible winter, present in the Army of Gates when Burgoyne surrendered at Saratoga in 1777, and was with Washington when Cornwallis surrendered at Yorktown.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
