Author: Ronald Clark Bonham

Arthur was born in Augusta County, Virginia, to John Bowen and Lillian McIlhaney. Arthur married Mary McMurray, whose father was a patriot. Arthur was the grandson of Moses Bowen, who emigrated from Wales in the 1690s.

In 1774 Arthur fought in the Dunmore War against Native American warriors in the Ohio valley. In 1775 he lived in Fincastle County, Virginia, which became Washington County, Virginia, in 1777, and joined the militia to defend his home and community from Native American warriors.

Arthur’s Revolutionary record is: He became an Ensign on 26 February 1777. He fought at the Battle of Kings Mountain on 7 October 1780 with his three brothers, Lieutenant Rees, Captain William, and Private Charles. He served on a Grand jury on 17 November 1778. He became Captain of the Washington County, Virginia, militia on 22 March 1781. He sat on a Grand jury on 15 May 1781.

At the war's end, Arthur, his wife Mary, and their children, Nancy, Elizabeth, John, William, Becky, Jane, and Arthur, became leaders in the community, having land, property, and livestock.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
