Joseph Blossom, son of Samuel and Hannah (Bodfish) Blossom, was born on 28 October 1747 at Barnstable, Massachusetts. Joseph had three siblings Thankful, Samuel, and Mehitable1.
Aged 22 years, Joseph married Alice Hamlen, daughter of Seth and Sarah (Blush) Hamlen, on 1 February 1770, at Barnstable. Together they had five children born from 1771 to 1785, Hannah, Chloe, Sarah, Samuel, and Benjamin2.
Joseph’s first service in the American Revolution was in 1780. The Payroll of “Lieutenant Nathaniel Pope’s company when on the late alarm at Rhode Island, but now under the command of Lieutenant Joseph Damon, in the Second Regiment, in County Bristol commanded by Colonel John Hathaway Esq. in Pay of the State of Massachusetts Bay, New England, in service by order of Council in the State of Rhode Island” lists 40 men, including Private Joseph Blossom having enrolled 6 August 1780, and with six days service, and total wages due of 2 pounds, 8 shillings3.
Joseph Blossom served again in 1781 as recorded on the “Payroll for Captain Henry Jenne’s company for service done in marching to Rhode Island agreeable to a Resolve of the General Court passed 28 February 1781”. Captain Jenne’s company payroll of 84 men lists Private Joseph Blossom entered service on 14 March 1781 and was discharged after four days, with total wages due of 9 shillings4.
Joseph owned property in the towns of Barnstable and Sandwich. 1790-1820 Census records for the Town of Sandwich and the 1798 Property Assessment Records show his residence in Sandwich. 28 January 1830, Joseph sold to his son Samuel “all my real estate in the towns of Sandwich and Barnstable” in consideration of $1000.
At the age of 86 years, Joseph Blossom died on 13 November 1833 at Sandwich. He was buried at the cemetery of West Barnstable beside his wife, Alice. She had preceded him in death on 11 November 1829 at the age of 82.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!
Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
