Josiah Bissell was born on 17 November 1714 in Windsor, Hartford County, Connecticut.1 He was the son of Josiah and Mariam (Gibbs) Bissell.2

  • Josiah was born on 8 June 1744 and died young.
  • Ruth was born on 5 March 1745 and died young.
  • Ann was born on 11 March 1748 and married Theodore Hinsdale.
  • Elijah was born on 16 June 1750 and married Keziah Elsworth.
  • Ruth was born on 21 October 1752 and married Elisha Stoughton.

He is mentioned at the baptism of his daughter Aurelia as belonging to the "7th Society (or Noth Society) under Parson Hinsdale."4

He was on a committee appointed by the General Assembly "to repair to sundry towns in the SW Quarter of the State" to" examine dangerous persons," i.e., persons suspected of disloyalty to the Patriot cause. While in the discharge of this duty, he was taken ill and died in Reading, Connecticut, of smallpox.  He was a "man of consequence in town and church, as his pastor thus enters his death in the N.S.R.: "December 21, 1776, died, Josiah Bissell, Esq., of the smallpox at Reading. A pillar has fallen!  A year of great mortality!"4

The Patriot died on 21 December 1776 and was buried with his wife, Ruth, in Palisado Cemetery in Windsor, Hartford County, Connecticut.2

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
