On October 8, 1744, Georg Wilhelm Berger and his son Herber arrive in Philadelphia on the Aurora. At least two other children of Georg Wilhelm came with them: Johann Christian and Anna Julianna. The signatures of Jorg Wilhelm Berger and Johann Christian Berger, who at the age of twenty was considered an adult, appear together among the signatures to the oath of Allegiance and to the oath of abjuration for the Aurora. Herber was under sixteen and, therefore not required to sign.
The Berger family immigrated to America from Dierdorf, Germany, which is about twenty-five kilometers north of Koblenz. In America, the family put down roots in Berks County, Pennsylvania. Herber Berger established a farm in Upper Tulpehocken Township, which remained in the family for about 200 years.
Heber Berger was born June 10, 1735 and was baptized in the Evangelische Kirche in Dierdorf, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany. He married Catherine Lang who was born on December 22, 1739 in Tulpehocken Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania. They had 13 children- Elizabeth, Georg Wilhelm, Anna Margaretha, Tobias, Anna Catherine, Maria Barbara, Johannes, Maria Margaretha, Diana Maria, Maria Magdalena, Johan Christian, Ludwig and Philip.
Herber was a private in the 6th Battalion under Captain Henry Shepler’s Company. He was also in Captain Reigel’s Company.
Herber died on February 11, 1815 and he is buried in Strausstown Union Cemetery in Berks County. His wife died February 22, 1819 and she is buried with her husband.
Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!
Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
