Author: George Edward Livingston

JACOB BEDELL: Born 1726, Essex County New Jersey. Son of John Bedell, Jr. and Susannah Valentine. In 1752 he married Eleanor Powers. They were the parents of at least 4 children, 3 sons and 1 daughter. Jacob was the father-in-law of Patriot Ancestor, Samuel Rutan listed above Was an Elder in the Presbyterian Church at “Turkey”, now New Providence, Essex County, NJ. Jacob Bedell served as a Private in Captain Silas Howell’s Company of the New Jersey Continental Line, 1st Regiment, commanded by the Right Honorable Earl of Stirling, Col. Mathias Ogden. He enlisted 10 Dec. 1775. He died 16 June 1777. It is unknown if he died, or was killed, on active duty. Jacob is buried in Essex County NJ, grave site unknown. After his death, his widow, Eleanor, married Capt. Jonathan Milford.
