More than 200 stones remain, many in very poor condition. Many families were moved to the "new" Riverview Cemetery when it was opened about 1860. Burials go back to 1734.Some stones have been inbedded in the flagstone pavement in front of the church. In 1968 part of the graveyard was paved over for a parking lot

Dr. John Beatty was born in Neshaminy, Bucks County, PA on December 10, 1749. He was a graduate of Princeton University. After graduation, he became a physician. In 1775 he was commissioned a captain in the Fifth Pennsylvania Battalion and promoted to major. Dr. Beatty was captured at the surrender of Ft. Washington November, 1776. He was exchanged in 1778, after which he became the Commissary General of Prisoners, a position that he held until his retirement in 1780, when he resumed his medical practice in Princeton, NJ.

Dr. Beatty became politically active after his military service. He was a member of the State council from 1781-1783 and a member of the Continental Congress in 1784-1785. He was appointed by President Lee as one of the special committee to receive and take leave of General Lafayette in the name of the Continental Congress while it was in session at Trenton on December 11, 1784. He was also a member of the State convention that adopted the Federal Constitution in 1787, a member of the State general assembly in 1789 and 1790 and served as speaker, and was elected as a Pro-Administration candidate to the Third Congress (March 4, 1793-March 3, 1795) and secretary of state of New Jersey from 1795-1805.

He also maintained his military and social obligations, serving as a brigadier general of the Somerset Militia from 1793-1796, a trustee of the College of New Jersey from 1787-1802, Masonic Right Worshipful Grand Master from 1791-1793 and from 1801-1804, and president of the Trenton Banking Co., from 1815-1826.

Dr. Beatty died in Trenton, N.J., May 30, 1826 and is interned at First Presbyterian Church in Trenton.
Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
