Author: John David Peet
Stephen 4 (Obadiah 3 Daniel 2 William 1) born at Stratford, Connecticut, 5 April 1740; died at Ripton, Connecticut, 16 Feb. 1804. Married Mehitable Beardsley. Stephen and Mehitable had five children, Ruth, Elam, Philo, Stephen and Mehitable. Son of Obadiah and Mary Beardsley (born Porter), daughter of John and Mary (Titherton) Porter. Two of his sons served in the Revolutionary War, Lemuel and Stephen. He was a Corporal in Captain Joseph Birdsey’s company in Fourth Militia regiment commanded by Colonel Samuel Whiting. The regiment was Composed of companies from Fairfield and Stratford. He was on the alarm list in a tour at the alarm at New Haven and from there to Fairfield; which was five days in service July 4th, 1779 to July 9th, 1779. Tryon's raid: In July 1779, British Major General William Tryon and 2600 men embarked onto a Royal Navy fleet led by Admiral George Collier, and raided the Connecticut ports of New Haven, Fairfield and Norwalk. Military and public stores, supply houses, and ships were destroyed, as were private homes, churches and other public buildings. The raids were ineffectually resisted by militia forces. The raid was part of a larger strategy designed by the British commander-in-chief, Lieutenant General Sir Henry Clinton, to draw Major General George Washington's Continental Army on to terrain where it might be more effectively engaged. The strategy failed, and both sides criticized General Tryon for the severity of his action. Although the raid had economic ramifications, and affected military supplies, Clinton's efforts had no long-term strategic impact.
Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
