Author: Michael B. Gunn
Born on December 27, 1759, in Washington County, Maryland, William Beard served as a Private with the Rowan County, North Carolina Militia in the Revolutionary War in Captain William Bell’s Company of Colonel Hampton’s Regiment; they were part of the Continental Line. He later served in Captain William Armstrong’s Company, Colonel Armstrong's Regiment of Lincoln County, North Carolina. He also served under Lieutenant Hill in Colonel Campbell’s Regiment, and on l6th of August, 1780, he participated in the Battle at Kings Mountain. He also was present at General Gate’s defeat in 1780. In December, 1780, he returned to Washington County, Maryland and served in Captain Simmons Company guarding prisoners at Fort Frederick, Maryland. In the 1840 census, William is living with Joseph Beard in Union Township as a Revolutionary War Pensioner.
 
He married Margery McCoy (1767-1821); children: 14, among whom were Joseph, and William b. 1798. "He moved into Union Township in 1809. A brief biographical memorandum in the possession of R. W. Bowdle, Esq., reads as follows: "William Beard, Jr., br Dec 27, 1759, in Frederick Co (Since Washington), was at Gen Gates' defeat Aug 16, 1780; moved to Greenbrier Co, in 1798; emigrated to Ross Co, OH. in 1809; was the father of fourteen children, including Joseph & William. N. B. He has ever been a true Whig, and a true friend of American liberty. Mr. Beard d in this twp in 1851, aged nearly ninety-three yrs. He is bur in Mt Union Cemetery, Chillicothe, OH. His tombstone reads: "William Beard died on March 24, 1851, aged 94 yrs. Marjery McCoy, wife of William Beard d Oct 11, 1821 aged 54 yrs." 
 
Cemetery Notes: "Located South of the Egypt Pike in Union Township, Ross County, Ohio. This site has been vandalized and William's service and death are now recognized by an appropriate grave stone at the Springbank Cemetery on State Route I04 in northern Ross County. Several descendants live in Union Twp, Ross Co." His grave has a VA stone and a 1776 marker.
