Obediah Basham was born in Bedford Co., Virginia in 1760 and volunteered for the 1st Regiment of the Virginia Line of the Continental Army in 1777. Records show he served for three years and was captured by the British at the Battle of Charleston in May 1780 and held on a prison ship until he was released at Williamsburg, VA where he was discharged.
He returned home to Beford Co. and married Celia Dowell in 1782. They farmed in Bedford Co., Virginia from 1789 thru 1804. By 1808 they had moved with their family thru the Cumberland Gap to Breckinridge Co. along Sinking Creek near Clifton Mills, KY. Here the family of 8 sons and one daughter: Bartlett, James, Micajah, Margaret, Henry, Frederick, Allen and Francis pursued farming. (Another daughter, Delilah, married and stayed in Virginia when the family moved to Kentucky.) The Basham family thrived in Breckinridge County for years and there are many descendants of Obediah and Celia still in the area.
Celia died in December 1827 and Obediah passed on May 28th 1840. His exact burial place is not known but it is presumed he is buried near Celia in the family cemetery not far from their original homestead near Sinking Creek. A marker has been placed there as a memorial to his patriotic service in the Revolutionary War.
Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!
Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
