Author: Mark Andrew Davis

James Bandfield Sr. was born on 1 May 1747 in England [his pension indicates 1749]. His surname is also written as Banfield, but as he was illiterate, it is unlikely he had a preferred spelling. His pension file also lists him as James Bandfield Senior. This doesn’t necessarily indicate he had a son named James but could mean there was a younger man of that name in the same area.

He was married about 1780 to Tabatha Jones in Tomkins County, New York. Tabitha died on 19 August 1823. Their known children were:

  • Edward was born in 1782 and married Martha “Paty” Cooper.
  • Peter was born on 3 January 1785 and married Mary Oliver.
  • Agnes was born about 1797 and married James Wilson.
  • Eleanor was born on 4 February 1798 and married Phineas Nelson.
  • Dorcas was born 23 June 1803 [gravestone] and married Jonathan Boardman.
  • Anna was born on 23 October 1806 and married Harry Hugg.
  • David was born on 15 November 1807 and married Marjorie Cooper.

After the death of his wife Tabitha in 1823, he married a second time to Melinda Owens. They had no known children.

He enlisted at Oldtown, Maryland on 28 December 1776 for a three-year term as a Private in the 1st Company of Captain Andrew Hines in the 6th Maryland Regiment of Colonel Otho Williams of the Continental Line. He remained with the Company until he was discharged in Morristown, New Jersey on 28 December 1779.

The Patriot died on 2 February 1832 in Ithaca, Tompkins County, New York. The couple’s joined stone can be found at Kings Cemetery. It is contemporary with his death and his epitaph reads:

“James Banfield, Born In England 1747 Died At Ithaca Feb, 2, 1832

He was 7 y.rs a Soldier in the Revolutionary WAR

Weep not for me ...”

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
