Bland W. Ballard was born near Fredericksburg, Virginia, on 16 October 1761.
He came to Kentucky in 1779, when he was 18 years old; he joined the militia. He enlisted in the Spring of 1779 in Spotsylvania County, Virginia, for three years in Captain Benjamin Robert’s company in Slaughter’s corps. He served in Colonel Bowman’s expedition in May 1779. During General Clark’s expedition against the Piqua towns in July 1780, he was seriously wounded in the hip, and he suffered from it until his death. He served again in General Clark’s expedition in November 1782 against the same towns.
After the Revolution, he was a spy for General Clark in the Wabash expedition, rendered abortive by a mutiny of the soldiers in 1786. On 31 March 1788, he survived the Tick Creek massacre in current-day Shelby County, Kentucky, in which his father, stepmother, two brothers, and a half-sister were killed. In 1791, he was a guide under Genenerals Scott and Wilkinson. On 20 August 1794, he was with General Wayne at the Battle of the “Fallen Timbers.”
A veteran of the War of 1812, he survived one more deadly fight with Native American warriors following the U.S. defeat at the Battle of the River Raisin on 22 January 1813 near present-day Monroe, Michigan.
He was elected to the Kentucky General Assembly in 1800, 1803 and 1805. Ballard County, Kentucky, was named in his honor in 1842.
The Patriot died in Shelby County, Kentucky, on 5 September 1853 – at the age of 92 years. His remains are interred in the State Cemetery at Frankfort.
Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!
Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
