Author: Edwin Dudley Burwell III

Spencer Mottrom Ball was born 9 September 1736 at the "Hill" at the Coan River, Northumberland County, Virginia.  He married Elizabeth Waring, a daughter of Colonel Francis Waring, of "Goldberry," Essex County.  They had five children.

He was the signer of the Leedstown Resolution.  The Resolution was written by Richard Henry Lee in response to the Stamp Act in 1765.  He also signed the "Association at Williamsburg," 22 June 1770.  He was a Burgess from Northumberland County in 1769-1771 and 1772-1774, and was Sheriff in 1773.  He was a large landowner in Northumberland County.  He provided Patriotic Service by furnishing supplies to the war effort, while a resident of Northumberland County, Virginia.
