Enlisted in Captain John Harris' Company (later Captain Stephen Chambers' Company) of the Twelfth Pennsylvania Regiment on 27 October 1776 in Sunbury, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania. The regiment left Sunbury on 18 December 1776 to join Washington's army in New Jersey. During his service with the Twelfth Pennsylvania, Samuel Auchmuty participated in the following: • Princeton (3 January 1777) • Encampment at Morristown, NJ (10 January - May 1777) • Bound Brook, NJ (12 April 1777) • Bonhamtown, NJ (15 April 1777) • Piscataway, NJ (10 May 1777) • Metuchen, NJ (17 May 1777) • Short Hills, NJ (26 June 1777) • Brandywine, PA (11 September 1777) • Germantown, PA (4 October 1777) • Whitemarsh, PA (6-10 December 1777) • Encampment at Valley Forge (19 December 1777 - 19 June 1778) • Monmouth, NJ (28 June 1778) The Twelfth Pennsylvania was disbanded and the remaining solders transferred to the Third Pennsylvania Regiment, effective 1 July 1778. Samuel Auchmuty received his discharge from the Pennsylvania Line on 25 January 1781 in Trenton, New Jersey. During his service with the Third Pennsylvania, Samuel Auchmuty participated in the following: • Encampment at Middlebrook, NJ (December 1778 - June 1779) • Stony Point, NY (16 July 1779) • Encampment at Morristown, NJ (December 1779 - June 1780) • The Blockhouse, Bergen Heights, NJ (21 July 1780) • Reinforcement of West Point, NY (25 September 1780) • Encampment at Morristown, NJ (December 1780 – January 1781) On 29 April 1782, Samuel Auchmuty was commissioned Captain of the Sixth Company, First Battalion Northumberland County Militia.
Grave: A marker in memory of Samuel Auchmuty is located in Fisher's Ferry Cemetery in Northumberland County, PA.
