This biography was augmented by PRS staff.

John Archbold was born in 1760, the son of Patrick and Mary Archbold of Donegal, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania.

It’s been suggested he served as a Soldier with Pennsylvania in the Revolutionary War, probably from Westmoreland County. However, no primary records have been found to support that service.

He married Sarah Ann (1752-1841), and his known children were:

  • Mary was born on 1 May 1783 and married Absalom Kent.
  • Nancy was born in 1784 and married Elias Best.
  • Hannah was born on 15 September 1788 and married Jacob Palmer.
  • Jane was born in 1791 and married Joseph Curry.
  • Bidelia “Biddy” was born on 11 January 1796 and married Joseph Spencer.
  • Elizabeth was born on 29 June 1798 and married 1) Samuel Gordon, and 2) Elijah Ford.
  • Sidela “Sibby” was born on 9 January 1800 and married David Gordon.
  • Margaret was born on 16 June 1806 and married Robert Campbell.

John was one of three on a committee to build the Ridge Church in 1823. The church was 50x30x12 feet high.

The Patriot died in 1835 and was buried at Ridge Church Cemetery, Harrison County, Ohio.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
