Dewalt Ankeny moved to Clearspring, Washington Co, MD from Lancaster Co (Lebanon Co) about 1762. He was one of several patriots appointed 30 Dec 1776 to form the county into companies after the militia had marched. Their purpose was to compel Dunkards and Mennonists to give their assistance. He took the Oath of Allegiance prior to 28 Feb 1778 before Hon. John Barnes.
He was born in Germany about 1728 as Johann Theobald but better known as Dewalt. His marriage to Catherine Lang with whom he had Christian born 25 Dec 1749, Peter born 6 Mar 1751, Catherine and Rebecca. His first wife, Mary Jane Domer died of injuries sustained attempting to save cattle from the burning barn.
He married last Margaret Frederick with whom he had John, Henry, George, Jacob, David, Mary, Margaret and Elizabeth. He died before 9 Apr 1782 leaving many children and is the progenitor of his family name in America. He is buried in an unknown orchard graveyard but a memorial stone is at the St. Paul’s Lutheran Reformed Church Cemetery near Clearspring, Washington Co, MD.

Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format.
