Author: President Gen Warren McClure Alter

Jacob was believed to have been born in Hesse Darmstadt, Germany, and immigrated to this country on the ship Beulah, which arrived in Philadelphia in September 1753. His father was Swiss, and his mother was a native of France.

He first settled in Lancaster county, Pennsylvania, and remained there for about sixteen years and later relocated to what is now Western Pennsylvania. He married Margaret Landis in 1769. The family moved to Washington county in about 1808 and died there in about 1815.

Of his known children, he had had six sons and four daughters. One daughter, Susanna, married Pennsylvania Governor Joseph Ritner. Jacob’s son David was born in 1775.

Jacob’s Revolutionary War service was as a Private in the 2nd Pennsylvania Regiment. Some records show he served as a cobbler or shoemaker for the army. Although we have been unable to find any documentation of his involvement in any notable battles or campaigns, we are extremely proud that our ancestor served the cause of freedom in our nation’s battle for liberty and justice.

Jacob Alter died on 18 April 1815 and was buried on his farm in Washington County, Pennsylvania.

Send a biographical sketch of your patriot!

Patriot biographies must be the original work of the author, and work submitted must not belong to another person or group, in observance with copyright law. Patriot biographies are to be written in complete sentences, follow the established rules of grammar, syntax and punctuation, be free of typographical errors, and follow a narrative format. The narrative should unfold in a logical manner (e.g. the narrative does not jump from time period to time period) or have repeated digressions, or tell the history of the patriot's line from the patriot ancestor to the author. The thinking here is that this is a patriot biography, not a lineage report or a kinship determination project or other report published in a genealogy journal. The biography should discuss the qualifying service (military, patriotic, civil) of the patriot ancestor, where the service was rendered, whether this was a specific state or Continental service, as well as significant events (as determined by the author) of the patriot's life. This is the entire purpose of a patriot's biography.
