Qualifying Service Description:

1777 and served as a Private and Corporal in Captain John Shumway's Company. Commanded by Colonels Jedediah Huntington and Starr. He was in the Battle of Monmouth and was discharged on 3 January 1780

Author: Dr. Michael Bernard Gunn

Asher Allen was born on 22 May 1756 in Mansfield, Tolland County, Connecticut, the son of Phinehas and Alice (Cady) Allen.

While a resident of Mansfield Township, Windham County, Connecticut, Asher enlisted on about 3 April 1777 and served as a Private and Corporal in Captain John Shumway's Company. Commanded by Colonels Jedediah Huntington and Starr. He was in the Battle of Monmouth and was discharged on 3 January 1780. He applied for a military pension on 11 May 1818 in Washington County, Ohio, and received an annual allowance of $96.00. Widow also received a pension, applying on 21 October 1843, in Bristol Township, Morgan County, Ohio.

He married Elizabeth Palmer on 29 April 1777 in Mansfield. Among their known children were: 

  • Phineas was born on 22 December 1793 and married Elizabeth Hull. 
  • Jehial was born on 3 December 1780 and married Sally Richardson.
  • Mary was born in 1788
  • Asher was on 11 March 1792 and married Elizabeth Fox.
  • Elizabeth was born on 5 June 1794 and married Benjamin Thorla.


The patriot died on 5 February 1840, in Morgan County, Ohio, at the age of 84, and his burial place is unknown. He has a cenotaph SAR Marker at Mound Cemetery in Marietta.
