Author: Dr. Michael Bernard Gunn

Ananias Allen was born on 4 January 1742 in Sussex County, New Jersey, the son of George and Mary Elizabeth (Collins) Allen. 

He served after being commissioned a Captain, 2nd Regiment, New Jersey Militia under Colonel Hawkinson. He commanded his company of 29 men serving in battalion command by Colonel John Seward under Brigadier General William Winds at New Windsor, New York, between 24th October and 25 November 1777. He commanded his regiment of 56 men serving under Colonel Aaron Hankinson at Shrapnack from 6th to 13th July 1778. Ananias commanded his company of 22 men serving under Colonel Hankinson at Shrapnack from 15th and 18th October 1778. 

He married Rachel Harker in 1772 in Sussex County, New Jersey. She was born on 17 September 1753 and died on 5 October 1826. Among their known children were: 

  • John was born on 1 May 1773 and married Elsy Kirkendahl.
  • Mary was born about 1775 and married David Gilmore
  • Daniel was born on 29 September 1777 and married Hannah Litton.
  • George was born in about 1778.
  • Margaret was born on 11 October 1779 and married Samuel Kirkendall.
  • Rachel was born in about 1783 and married Joseph Broomhead.
  • Elijah was born on 15 March 1785 and married Margaret Squires.
  • David was born on 17 March 1787 and married Nancy Squire.
  • James was born on 24 June 1790 and married Elizabeth Van Gorder.
  • Ananias Jr. was born in about 1793 and married Sarah White.
  • Jeremiah was born in about 1794
  • Elizabeth was born in 1796 and married Mathew Jones.

He made his Last Will and Testament on 15 July 1823 from Madison County, Ohio. In the document, he names his wife, Rachel, and children John, Mary, Margaret, George, Elijah, David, James, Jeremiah, Daniel (deceased), Elizabeth, and Ananias.

The Patriot died on 2 October 1825 and was buried in the old part of Bloomingburg Cemetery, Bloomingburg, Fayette County, Ohio.
